Gros Piton Climb

Experience the highlight of your visit to the island as you climb the strenuous, but exhilarating trail to the top of this 2619-foot high monument, the Gros Piton. A bus ride from your hotel takes you onto the Fond Gens Libre (village of free people) Community, to the base of the trail, which winds around the mountain at a gradual gradient. There are dramatic changes in the vegetation, ranging from arid deciduous woodlands along the coast, to a broad middle zone rainforest and an upper mountain zone of elfin woodland and windswept dwarf forest. Tropical birds flit in and around as you ascend the slope. These include the St. Lucian Wren, the St. Lucia Oriole, the Black Finch, and the Red Neck Pigeon. After a strenuous, but one of a kind experience, we return to the coach for our return ride to the hotel along the same route. Panoramic vista abound in every direction. Numerous sites, used by Brigands or black freedom fighters during the slave rebellion of 1748, can be seen including caves, tunnels, rock shelters, camps, signal stations, look outs and landing sites. This excursion is provided by Barefoot Holidays.
