Jumby Bay is the nicest, most luxurious property in Antigua. The hotel is located on a private island off the coast of Antigua. The ferry to Jumby Bay takes approximately 8 minutes. From the airport to Jumby Bay’s dock takes about 5-10 minutes. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with cold towels and...more
Insider Tip
  • One of the resort's lodging buildings, called Pond Bay House, includes a three-story tower with panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea to the west and south, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east, Antigua 2.5 miles away, and all of Long Island. Guests can also ascend a spiral staircase inside a stone tower (once part of the sugar plantation's mill) to reach another lookout.
Hotel Overview
  • Private island
300-acre private island resort off the coast of Antigua, home to just 39 suites and 11 villas.
  • Four-poster beds
Suites include carved mahogany four-poster king beds. Villas include four-poster bamboo beds. No TVs.
  • Beaches, fine dining
Property has two beaches and an 18th-century plantation house containing a fine-dining restaurant and lounge.
What to Expect:
  • Once a sugar plantation, 300-acre Long Island is owned by Americans and Britons who maintain multi-million-dollar vacation homes on the island away from Jumby Bay Resort's 85 acres and ensure the island's environment remains unspoiled. Endangered Hawksbill turtles lay eggs on the northern beach, their nocturnal June-November arrivals recorded by researchers and assisted by resort guests. Non-woolly feral sheep descended from ancestors left by the Spanish in the 16th century roam the island. Water birds flock to depressions that become ponds during rare heavy rains. Songbirds, mourning doves, and egrets abound. The Blue Pelican can be spotted. The island is so ideally situated to catch tradewind breezes for a long time the resort offered no air conditioning. No cars other than a small security-staff van are permitted. Guests use bicycles strategically located so they can ride or walk at will without regard for keeping track of "their" bikes. Complimentary golf-cart shuttle service is also available.
Amenity Highlights:
  • The resort's main 0.5-mile beach curves along a calm-water bay facing Antigua Island to the west. Thatch-roof shades and thickly cushioned lounge chairs line the beach, ensuring each guest ample room for uncrowded sunbathing and swimming. (Children have their own beach and swing-set south of the resort's dock.) Another 0.5-mile beach lies along the northern shore, providing beachcombing and snorkeling among coral heads. Secluded inland, a 25-meter lap pool furnishes freshwater exercise and tranquil sunbathing.

  • The resort offers 39 guestrooms and suites located in three types of buildings widely spaced within the resort's main section on Long Island's west side. Pond Bay House is a one- and two-story Mediterranean-style white building with a red tile roof featuring an expansive Caribbean-view central terrace furnished with cushioned teak lounge chairs. Other Mediterranean-style buildings contain two suites each. The third type consists of six octagonal "rondavels" - South African-style one-story cottage-like buildings with conical wood-shingle roofs located near the Estate House, which contains the resort's main dinner restaurant and evening bar/lounge. Flowering tropical gardens screen all three types.

Guestrooms and suites include carved mahogany or bamboo four-poster king beds (or double beds) and Rosewood Hotels & Resorts' signature Rosewood Bed bedding. This consists of an extra-thick custom-made mattress, 100-percent-Egyptian-cotton Italian-made sheets (including double-twisted satin-finish custom-stripe top sheet), and down/feather pillows. Jumby Bay beds also include feather beds atop mattresses. Thick towels, including bathsheets, furnish additional comfort. Lady Primrose toiletries supply luxury. In-room beach towels, umbrellas, and walking sticks provide convenience.

Other features of guestrooms and suites include: white walls and ceilings with dark Brazilian-walnut trim; tile floors with bamboo mats; mahogany-colored rattan and wicker furniture; thickly cushioned teak balcony and patio furniture; Bose Wave radio/CD players; and crank-open louvered doors that allow tradewind breezes to complement ceilings fans. All guestrooms have air conditioning.

In addition to guestrooms and suites, Jumby Bay also offers Mediterranean-style two-bedroom white villas with red tile roofs that provide accommodations for two couples or families in a "village" of flowering gardens and cobblestone streets overlooking the island's east side harbor. Set up as private homes, villas are rented out in owners' absences. Decor and furnishings vary somewhat from guestrooms and suites'. Rattan furniture is natural color rather than mahogany, and, unlike most guestrooms and suites, villas include televisions with U.S. cable service and VCRs. Villas contain full kitchens even though guests are included in the resort's All-Inclusive Plan. Each villa comes with a complimentary four-seat electric golf cart for getting around the island.

    Also offering an All-Inclusive Plan.
