  • The 286-room, eight-story hotel presents a curved face to Hilo Bay, all the better for enjoying how the sky lights up when the sun drops behind 13,796-foot Mauna Kea. In front of the hotel is Coconut Island, which was believed by ancient Hawaiians to contain healing powers. Today the island is a peaceful spot for swimming, picnicking, and fishing. Within a few minutes' walk of the hotel is the large, Japanese-style Liliuokalani Park, which is a favorite strolling spot for visitors.

Memo to the guests of Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel
Classic Vacations have been advised by the Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel that effective April 15, 2013 they will begin an exciting and extensive $4.1 million renovation of the guest rooms, elevator modernization and life safety systems. The guest room renovations will include the replacement of guest room furnishings, wall coverings, draperies, carpets and bedding, bathroom fixtures, counter tops, flooring and tiles.

The hotel plans to welcome guests to the first phase of their renovated rooms in June with a full completion of the project by October 2013. Guest floors will be renovated two floors at a time. The renovation project will entail no jack hammering however the hotel is a concrete building and the project will include the removal of bathroom shower tiles, flooring and picture frames will be mounted as part of the room refurbishment.

The Castle Hilo Hawaiian is comprised of one building with a central bank of three elevators. Existing elevators will need to be used by both guests and construction crews from the basement up. There is only one elevator that originates from the basement level. Whenever possible, construction crews will be limited to one elevator. Guests will see 40 foot storage containers in the parking lot and may encounter construction workers going up and down elevators with furniture and supplies. Large trash bins will also be visible in parking lot. Hotel balconies are not schedule to be part of the project with renovations limited to guest rooms and corridors. The hotel will make every effort to screen the renovation project from view and minimize any inconvenience to guests. Regardless of all precautions taken, projects of this nature will at times to visible and audible to guests.
