This resort feels like it was carved out of the cliffs, and indeed, it took four and a half years to blast a tunnel through the mountainside before construction began on the resort. Guests reach the resort by driving through the tunnel, after clearing a staffed security checkpoint.
Everything here is impeccable. Many of our group chose this as their favorite 5-star resort; however, I found the surrounding vistas too stark for my tastes. Shielded on one side by ocean’s expanse, and guarded on the other side by mountains of boulders, it is definitely a place that will appeal to those seeking to experience absolute privacy in ample accommodations with incredible views. I personally felt somewhat trapped and claustrophobic by the setting…but that impression was peculiar to me, and not shared by others in our group.
One of 3 dining options, the cliff-side fine dining restaurant perches on a narrow rocky ledge, set a short distance away from the main reception area. The atmosphere at night is exclusive, intimate, and romantic, with the waves crashing far below on the beach and the candle-lit tables forming small pinpoints of light above. At the entrance to the outdoor dining area, freshly-caught fish is displayed market-style on the back of an upside-down boat. Diners may choose their particular fillet, and the chef will prepare it to their specifications.
The gym overlooks the ocean … during whale season, we were told, guests may work out a little longer than during other seasons, because the view is so remarkable. The fitness center also boasts two private rooms, including one rigged with an “e-trainer”: a touch screen in one corner through which you can select one of several types of fitness sessions. The video is projected onto a large screen in the center of the room, so that it seems as if you have a personal coach in the room with you. Spin bikes have been ordered, so spin classes are just around the corner.
