Experiencing the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca is at once a step into the traditions of the past, as well as a welcome into a vibrant community with a rich cultural history. Take a private tour through the city in the midst of this festival (which is uniquely lavish in Oaxaca) and relish the once-in-a-lifetime sights and sounds! The smell of a bubbling traditional chocolate mole will wash over you as the aroma of fresh produce wafts from the local market, and just as soon as that has whetted your appetite, you'll come around the corner into view of a spectacular procession complete with a full brass band, flower-wearing costumers in a riot of colors, and life-sized marionette puppets of skeletons and ghosts. You'll watch the parade wind its way through the city streets toward the cemetery, where people have laid down a path of marigold petals, meant to lead the spirits of their loved ones to the intricate, detailed altars that have been erected at their resting places. Cap off your day with an elaborately prepared sumptuous feast of local flavor, including rich, slow-cooked rabbit mole, crunchy fried grasshoppers, and a drink of smoky yet spicy Mezcal, the only-made-in-Oaxaca tequila derivative. And if you're feeling brave, you can even eat the worm in the bottle that proves it's really Mezcal!
