Esperanza (December 2010)
September 15, 2011
Five-star, all-suite Esperanza sits high above a pair of private beaches on Punta Ballena (“Whale Point), about four miles north of Cabo San Lucas on the Baja peninsula.
The Auberge resort, a Relais & Chateaux property, has two sides to the property: a private residences side, (which Classic does not sell) and resort casitas and villas that Classic does sell. The resort sits between Fiesta Americana Grand Los Cabos Golf and Spa, and Zoetry Casa del Mar, just a few minutes’ drive north of the town of Cabo san Lucas, and perhaps a 20- to 30-minute drive from the airport.
The turnoff to the property is secured with a roped-gate entry and staffed security checkpoint, guaranteed to protect the privacy of the most publicity-shy celebrity. A paved lane, bordered on both sides by desert shrubs and cacti, leads to the resort’s thatched arrival rotunda. The quarter-mile drive lends a feeling of traveling through the desert to an oasis.
Each guest is welcomed by Mr. Gomez, the general manager, and other resort employees. The reception buildings sit up on top of the bluff that divides the two beaches, about 200 feet above the ocean. Down below, waves crash on Esperanza’s two private-sand beaches. As you face the ocean, a seated concierge area on the left and an upscale boutique on the right beckon when you are ready.
Guests receive a five-minute tour upon arrival, with check-in completed inside the guests’ casita. Every guest receives butler service. The resort staff takes pride in gathering as much information as possible – from a guest’s sandal size, to food allergies – to make the stay memorable. Please ask your callers to share as much information about the guests as possible with Esperanza, to make their stay a truly memorable experience.
Beaches & Pool
Resort facilities include three pools and two private beaches. The two sandy beaches are secluded coves guarded by rocky bluffs, making them very private – but not swimmable, nor suited to long walks. They are perfect, however, for enjoying the sun, the sand, and the seclusion. Five cabanas on the beach are available on a first come, first served basis; food and beverage service is provided. On Wednesdays, Esperanza hosts a beach barbecue that is open to the public.
Palm trees stand sentinel in two rows above Esperanza’s main resort pool, above the second sandy beach. The pool is huge -- large enough to satisfy a serious swimmer, though not quite Olympic size. And when the spa is not busy, spa employees provide complimentary services by the pool.
Esperanza’s Spa aspires to pamper in privacy. A rabbit trail of candle-lit stone pathways enclosed by shoulder-high stone walls winds through the facility. This “celebrity walk” enables guests to enter and exit the spa without being seen, if desired. Treatment rooms feel hidden away. Water abounds, cascading gently down rock walls, or bubbling up to overflow the edge of a giant urn. Desert and tropical plants lend a sense of harmony and connection to the earth. The locker area calls to mind a rainforest. Lounge chairs, agua fresca fruit drinks, a bathing-suit-optional area, and hydrotherapy center for ritual cleansing are available to all guests. A “simple but creative” treatment menu includes exfoliating wraps featuring various fresh fruits, a Corona beer facial, and massage from head to toe (hot stone, Thai, full-body massage). An adjoining fitness area boasts a small selection of cardio-pulmonary equipment and weights. Complimentary yoga classes are taught daily at 9 a.m.
Children of all ages are allowed in the villas, but children under age 16 are not allowed in the casitas and suites

Guests can dine at three restaurants, or relax at Esperanza’s swim-up, oceanfront bar. The Lounge Bar also features a fire pit, and offers a casual, quiet place to enjoy dinner.

Good to know:
Esperanza has 1 room on the bottom level with 2 Queen beds; rollaways are available. Despite a 70% occupancy when we visited, the grounds looked empty. Esperanza would be a great choice for guests looking to unwind, relax, and be pampered.
Many guests choose not to leave the property during their entire stay. With the relaxing pools, sanctuary-like spa, exercise room, backyard snorkeling sites, and 24-hour room service, it's easy to see why. A coffee shop and food market allow guests to set their own pace and a nearby walking trail is great for exploration. A yoga and meditation room help guests stay in shape.
Guests can borrow wireless-enabled laptop computers to check e-mail nearly anywhere on the property while sipping their morning coffee.
