Location, location, location
October 4, 2011
Directly across Piazza Ognissati from the Grand Hotel, the Westin Excelsior Florence blends traditional Italian history and art with a bustling contemporary ambiance. Murano chandeliers hang from the ceiling of an overly active lobby that boasts a prevalent concierge desk, a reading lounge and fashionable bar. Whether a Grand Deluxe room or a Jr. Suite, the spacious accommodations will provide comfort and relaxation. Although most aspects of the hotel were more than acceptable, the hotel was very busy and seemed to be hosting a variety of groups. Young couples, friends traveling together, or zealous business travelers would probably do well at this particular property. Someone looking for the Florentine experience would only benefit from hotels location and the opportunity fraternize with locals; a hip rooftop bar is slated to open in January 2010.
I did not mind the fact that this hotel was extremely busy, but it could be a problem with some. Expectations need to be conveyed to the traveler; this is not your mellow, run-of-the-mill, old style Florentine property. It is a Westin (I say this based on activity in the hotel), that happens to be in a phenomenal city!
