Old World Charm
September 30, 2011
The Chesterfield Mayfair is a lovely 4 star property situated in the heart of London. The Mayfair area is known for its exclusive shopping and smart, chic atmosphere. The hotel is just steps from the sparkling shops on Bond Street, Regent Street and the excitement of Piccadilly. Nearby attractions include the Royal Academy of Arts, Burlington Arcade, Fortnum and Mason (yummy specialty food shop) and Buckingham Palace. The Chesterfield Mayfair is part of the family owned Red Carnation Hotel Group. The owners are very focused on guest satisfaction, and all profits are put back into the hotel.
My first impression of the hotel was that it was very quiet. We arrived for our inspection at about 11:00 am, and even though the lobby was busy with departing guests, they were taken care of in a discreet manner. I would describe the ambience of the hotel as understated elegance with old world charm. The hotel manages to combine service and courtesy with modern standards of comfort and technology.
Off the lobby, the hotel has a lovely library decorated in the old English style. This area is used as a day room, tea room, relaxation area and lounge for the hotel guests. I was a bit disappointed that with the attention to all of the detail of the furniture and fabrics, the shelves were displayed with imitation books. It would have been nice to see actual novels and works of literature displayed in this area.
The hotel offers a number of dining options. For fine dining, Butler’s restaurant is an elegant choice. Wine lovers choose Butler’s for the wonderful wine from the hotel’s Wine room and for their special wine tasting events hosted by Antoine Depierre. The Conservatory is altogether different with its light and airy space and views over the garden and fountain area. The Conservatory is often used for light lunches, cocktail parties and afternoon tea. The Terrace Bar is famous for its fine cognac and aged malt. Hotel guests and locals alike enjoy the ambience while listening to the sounds of the resident pianist.
The Chesterfield Mayfair offers 94 deluxe guest rooms and 13 suites. The hotel has all of the expected amenities of a 4 star property. All rooms have individually controlled heat and air conditioning, fax with UK/US modem lines, voicemail, desk & bedside telephones, all Sky Sports channels, Bloomberg, CNN and movies on demand. Rooms have twice daily maid service, deluxe toiletries, powerful hairdryers, plush bathrobes, complimentary bottled water, tea and coffee making facilities, 24 hour room service. I was very surprised to find that the hotel offers complimentary high speed internet, which usually is at a premium charge at most other hotels in London.
I was very impressed with the décor of the rooms and suites. I absolutely loved the fabric covered walls, which gave the rooms a very upscale, rich feel. The rooms and halls in the royal blue color scheme took my breath away! The marble floor bathrooms with the under floor heating was also a nice touch. Space is a premium in London, and I was impressed with his and hers closets. It is hard to find one closet let alone two in London hotel rooms. The deluxe suites are very stylish and provide space and comfort. Suites include fresh flowers upon arrival, delicious canapés, a full ice bucket and sliced lemon delivered each evening. Faux fur throws are provided during the winter months for that “cozy “effect. Bose docking stations are standard.
I was impressed to find that the hotel provides guest preference forms so that they can obtain and retain information on guests preferences for magazines, books, snacks, drinks, décor, etc….Flat screen televisions are in 40% of the rooms and will soon be standard in all rooms within a year. The hotel replaces their beds every 5 years, so that they feel fresh and comfortable consistently.
Hotel secret : Red Carnation Hotels owns Bouchard Finlayson Vineyard in South Africa, and its wine is available at the hotel.
