What is Volunteer Travel?

Travel With Purpose

Meaningful travel is about being a part of something larger than yourself. It’s about being immersed in a new culture, fostering genuine connections and seeing the world through a new lens. It’s about embarking on an unforgettable journey and creating a lasting legacy.

Travel with ME to WE and be a part of real, sustainable change. ME to WE is a social enterprise that creates socially conscious products and experiences that allow people to do good through their everyday choices. Half of ME to WE profits are donated to support their partner, WE Charity, while the other half is reinvested to grow the mission of the social enterprise.

Volunteer alongside community members on a development project as part of WE Charity’s sustainable development model, WE Villages. Through WE Villages, our local staff work with rural villages and regional governments to support, teach and empower people within five Pillars of Impact that lead communities to true independence: Education, Water, Health, Food and Opportunity. With 20 years of history building WE Villages, each hands-on experiential trip offers participants and communities the opportunity to partner and learn from each other.

Every ME to WE Immersive Volunteer Trip is built on a defining level of service and commitment, called Signature Service. Expert ME to WE staff members guide and assist with every step of your journey from the moment you reach out to them until after you return. From beginning to end, they take care of all the details—so you can focus on what’s really important: being present and connected.

What to Expect on a ME to WE Trip

ME to WE trips connect participants with learners and leaders from different cultures

ME to WE trips make an impact

When you participate in a ME to WE Immersive Volunteer Trip, you contribute to WE Charity’s renowned sustainable development model, WE Villages, by contributing to one or more of the model’s five Pillars of Impact—Education, Water, Health, Opportunity and Food. Alongside locals, you might lay foundations or bricks for schools, run summer camps for children, or support workers digging fields and planting trees.

The community and its needs determine your volunteer efforts. We help people build up stable, thriving communities that give them the power and dignity to support themselves. Our local staff work with rural villages and regional governments to support, teach and empower people within the five Pillars of Impact.

Alongside locals, you might lay foundations or bricks for schools, run summer camps for children, or support workers digging fields and planting trees. Your efforts contribute to the many important steps needed to establish the five pillars, which eliminate the obstacles to education.

Half of ME to WE’s net profits are donated to support WE Charity—helping you make an even bigger impact on the place you visit.

ME to WE Immersive Volunteer Trips connect participants with learner and leaders from different cultures

You will gain perspective and a deeper understanding of the lives of women in developing communities when you sit under the shade of a tree with mamas learning to make handcrafted beaded accessories or hauling a jerry can of water along a stony path.

Participants meet and work with community members from another culture and understand their joys and challenges. Participants visit WE Villages schools and meet community leaders, who are proud, equal partners in these holistic initiatives.

Each trip promotes dialogue and cultivate relationships by giving participants a unique opportunity to spend time with local community members and put real faces, names and stories to the impact of their volunteer work. Participants experience and embrace the sights and sounds of a new culture, by tasting the unique flavors of local cuisines, taking part in traditional activities and learning new languages.

You will also find adventure on every trip. Whether you’re searching the Big Five on safari in Kenya; being trained by a Maasai warrior to throw a traditional rungu; or participating in a traditional Hindu prayer ceremony in northern India, each adventure puts participants side-by-side with community members who teach you skills or deepen your experience through participation.

No detail is left untouched. From hot water bottles, turndown service and packed lunches, they ensure you can focus on each moment, with the peace of mind that safety is the top priority.

Trip facilitators, expert local guides, world-class cooks and service staff are dedicated to making your Volunteer Adventure comfortable, safe and unforgettable.

• Suitable for all age groups.

• Travel year-round (Saturday departures from US)

• Safety and comfort are the priority

Here’s what recent travelers had to say:

"I wanted a memorable and meaningful way to celebrate, rather than throw a big birthday bash. I knew traveling and volunteering with ME to WE would give me the opportunity to have a life- changing experience that my family, friends and I would never forget"

— Demi Lovato

"What does it mean to have the chance to travel to Kenya? I think it really could be a life changing, really important experience for a lot of people and it’s a totally safe, beautiful, comfortable, environment. I’ve done a lot of trips to developing parts of the world and this is by far the most comfortable—I would bring my kids here."

— Natalie Portman

"Traveling to Kenya with ME to WE was truly a transformational experience. In one incredible week, we spent time with the local community, helped build a hospital, went on early morning walking safaris with Masaai warriors and celebrated with the first graduating class of girls at the Kisaruni Girls Secondary School. These girls were remarkable, confident in their ability to change their communities and the world.

Evenings under the Kenyan sky, sitting around the fire with our new found friends and exchanging stories were the perfect wind-down to our active, fun-filled days. I think the children in our group enjoyed it the most. And having shared this amazing experience, I know we made friends for life.

The delicious food, the comfortable accommodations (with hot water bottles in our beds every night) and the warm hospitality of our ME to WE hosts was the crowning touch to the unforgettable 10 days we will carry in our hearts forever!

— Bari Jain, Sr. Director, Marketing

“We are so proud of the wall that we built! We also built amazing memories that will change our lives forever. As a family we reconnected with the importance of community and helping others. Our daughters gained the perspective we had hoped and more. An added benefit was also connecting as a family sharing each amazing moment together, the technology free days and the simple pleasure of enjoying every meal together as a family. We felt safe the entire time. We also felt spoiled as every member of the ME to WE team treated us like royalty.”

— Chinnery Family
