Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort
A café adjoining the resort offers a seaside setting for Caribbean-accented meals. Wednesday night features what is widely regarded as St. Lucia's best Caribbean show (music, dance, stilt walkers, fire eaters). Lord Glenconner, a Scotsman living next door who developed Mustique as an island getaway for Princess Margaret, Mick Jagger, and others rich and famous, owns and frequents the café.
The resort faces secluded Jalousie Bay between St. Lucia's signature twin peaks, Petit Piton and Gros Piton. A beach of light-colored sand fronts the bay. Petit Piton rises above the Caribbean Sea adjacent to the resort, and floats designate a snorkeling/diving area beside the mountain's wall. Use of snorkeling gear is complimentary; scuba diving is available for a surcharge.
What to expect:
The resort comprises a steeply pitched, densely forested, natural amphitheater cupped between the Pitons, with Petit Piton's sheer wall on the north side appearing close enough to touch. This dramatic setting attracts guests seeking snorkeling, diving, and hiking, as well as couples desiring privacy-with-a-view in rooms and villas. Shuttles transport guests around the resort.
