Because of constant volcanic activity, you'll find white sands and black sands on the island of Hawaii. Located on the southeastern Ka'u coast, Punaluu Black Sand Beach is one of the most famous black sand beaches in Hawaii.Located between the towns of Pahala and Naalehu in Ka'u, Punaluu Black Sand Beach's jet black shores are an unforgettable sight. The broad waterfall — nearly 100 feet in diameter — plunges over a natural lava cave and into the river below. When it rains, (which it often does in Hilo), the engorged Wailuku River makes the falls wider, muddier and louder. On these days, you won’t see the rainbows for which this spot is named, but the sheer volume of water and the accessibility of this spot for all ages make it a fun, quick and easy excursion.Duration: 45 minutesStop At: Saddle Road, Hawaii Highway 200, Kailua-Kona, Island of Hawaii, HISaddle Road, Hawaii, is considered among the most spectacular roads in the world. This is 55-mile drive of a chance of a lifetime experience. Hawaii’s Route 200 goes through all four of her climates – tropical forests, arid desert, lush grasslands and misty mountaintop fog. Between miles 19 and 23, you’ll see a few places with lava flows and young vegetation and trees. But just after Saddlehouse Road, you’ll see the ridges that show where a 1936 flow slowly came to a stop 2 miles away. Near the road you can see where lava thickened and left the telltale mounds of a slowing flow. From here, you’ll continue through the volcanic aftermath of hundreds of thousands of years of lava activity as you head toward Belt Road, where you’ll eventually descend into Kona or Waikoloa.Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Traveler Reviews

My favorite part of the adventure was seeing the active volcano. I was a bit skeptical about booking this tour seeing as it was an full day but I’m so glad that I did. I only had two days here on the big island and I’m glad I spent the entire day on this tour. Our tour guide Erik was awesome. If I could've given him 20 stars I would’ve. He’s very funny and knowledgeable. He made you feel comfortable and everybody laughed and engaged like one big happy family. Those 11 hours went by so fast because he kept us engaged. He catered to everyone’s needs/wants and opinions. Well worth the money. I recommend this experience and will definitely be booking again when I return with children. Many blessings to your business Erik. God bless.

Erik was a great guide and we all enjoyed the adventure. As a geologist he answered all questions thoroughly and accurately. He was thoughtful kind and knowledgeable and knew a lot of history about the island. We started our day at a coffee farm then onto some of the most beautiful sites, black sand beaches where we saw turtles and black crabs, fresh water waterfalls, lava tubes and of course the volcanoes which had active lava . Lunch was at a great little stop that had friendly staff and good selection of food. The tour is well worth your time and we highly recommend the tour if you are looking for a full day adventure. We have two boys (11 & 14) who also really enjoyed the trip. The folks at Hawaiian Geo Tours are very accommodating if you have any questions or special requests just reach out to them. Thanks Erik for a great day!

Zane was awesome! He knew the best spots to stop at for each area! our kids loved seeing it all and learning from an expert geologist! He shared so many facts and info about the island! He brought plenty of snacks for the guests and arranged for a perfect sit down lunch - even made sure I had veggie options for me! We highly recommend this tour!!

Just breathtaking! I would absolutely recommend this tour from Hawaiian Geo Tours. Our guide Eric, was a geologist by profession before starting this tour company so he was extremely knowledgeable about Volcanoes, Geology as well the history of Big Island and Hawai’i. He was a great guide, kind and met all our needs. We had a blast (no pun intended lol) and would 10/10 recommend this tour :)

Zane is the best tour guide ever, not only he explains everything very well because of his knowledge and experience , he is very detailed and takes very good care of us throughout the day. Everything we see in this tour is very unique, the sit down restaurant luncheon is awesome, well worth the money!
