From beginner surf lessons to surf coaching for accomplished surfers, Frijoles Locos Surf Shop in Playa Grande offers a complete range of surf lesson options. People of all ages, from kids to grandparents, enjoy our professional, fun, and safe surf instruction.Beginners start out with our safety & ocean awareness instruction and pop up practice on the beach before you hit the ocean and catch your first waves.Intermediates will get a refresher on safety and will appreciate the instructor's local knowledge of the break and help identifying the best waves.Playa Grande literally translates to “big beach,” with plenty of space for our surf instructors to select a quiet, uncrowded location for your surf lesson. I took 4 private lessons on 4 consecutive days from Jost. He is an incredibly focused, attentive and skilled surf instructor.
Prior to my lessons with him, I hadn’t been on a surfboard in 18 months due to the pandemic.
With me as his student, he had the challenging task of helping me get back to the level I was at prior to the pandemic. Not only did he succeed in that, but with his coaching I was able to surf better than I ever had been before.
Being in the waves with Jost was both fun and fulfilling.

This place was great! We were true beginners and were frankly a little afraid of surfing but we did better than I expected thanks to Andy’s help! Would recommend to anyone who is just starting out or already experienced but trying to get better

These guys are awesome! Andy, Eli and Pano are the best! There are focused on safety, having fun and catching waves.
They offer great instruction for all skill levels.

I’ve learned more from Andy than any surf coach ever. He’s thoughtful, observant, highly intelligent and extremely courteous. Overall a great combination! Andy is a great find and I look forward to working with him in the future.

Wow! If you get a chance to learn from Andy consider yourself lucky. This wonderful guy will not only teach you how to surf, but he will put you on the right path to understanding how to safely progress for the future.
I learned so much in a short time. I especially appreciated his deep insight into technique, safety, meteorology, reading the peak, and what I need to do to improve.
Andy is a positive, very capable, patient instructor and communicator. And when I come back to Costa Rica I’ll be surfing with him again.
