This was a good place to rent mountain bikes and kayaks from. The mountain bikes we rented were not the best, but we still had a ton of fun on the area trails. After that we rented kayaks and paddled around the little lagoon, which in wintertime is home to some delightful manatees! We also took the advice of the shop guy and paddled into the mangroves to get to the adjacent beach. This is an excellent outfitter for a morning of easy bite-sized adventures and you can be back in Miami proper for lunch, or continue to explore the key to the south. The staff were easy to work with and let us leave our belongings in their office. The location is a bit tricky to get to for tourists without cars - our rideshare driver (Lyft) had a hard time finding the place - the GPS location in rideshare apps are wrong, and you have to pass a parking/entrance kiosk to get into the area (the guards didn't seem to care and didn't make our driver pay any money, but also gave us wrong directions). Renting a clear double kayak was easy and the staff was helpful. We wanted to have a manatee experience and they were there and easy to find. There is a beach where we parked our kayak and had a picnic. Not a beach for swimming there, but lots of windsurfers. Rates are very reasonable. If you want to see manatees in their natural habitat this is the place to go.

Virginia Key Outdoor Center is AMAZING! I have enjoyed their kayak and paddleboard rentals several times and they never disappoint- the staff is super friendly and helpful, and the coastlines, lagoon, and ocean are too beautiful. I've seen manatees, rays, schools of fish, starfish, hermit crabs, and more. The area is so nice that we used it as a venue for a video shoot with Vice Media and Refinery29! I also work for an ocean cleanup nonprofit, and VKOC always opens up their doors for us to host cleanup paddle events- s/o Diana for your constant help! I have loved working with Virginia Key Outdoor Center so much and look forward to more fun & impactful work together :)

It was ok. They did explain things, however no tour guide in the water with you. I thought of this like a tour and it’s not.
