Overview
ItineraryThis is a typical itinerary for this productStop At: Curtea de Arges Monastery, Bulevardul Basarabilor 1, Curtea de Arges 115300 RomaniaCurtea de Arges Monastery is one of the most famous attractions in Romania. It’s also an excellent choice if you’re looking to discover centuries-old religious sites. Its unique architectural style makes it special even in Romania, a country that has hundreds of religious monuments.Built 500 years ago by Prince Neagoe Basarab, the church became one of the most important in Southern Romania. Its original architecture inspired for centuries that of many other churches, but none came close to it. The consecration ceremony from 1517 highlighted the importance of the edifice. Even the Patriarch of Constantinople and many priests from Mount Athos attended the event.Duration: 1 hourStop At: Poienari Castle, Transfagarasan, Arefu 117040 RomaniaThe fortress of a legendary Prince Vlad the Impaler. Surrounded by legends and forests, overlooking the abys from its high-altitude location, the fortress of Poenari is part of the legacy of the mythical Vlad the Impaler. This medieval prince, praised for his victories against the Turks and his ultimate sense of justice, was also dreaded for his extreme punishments against traitors.Vlad the Impaler who ruled Walachia three times (1448, 1456-1462, 1476) enlarged the fortress of Poenari. He built a 60 meters long and 10-15 meters wide rock curtain around the original three levels tower. Curious enough, the legends of the time mention the prince forcing traitor boyards to build the fortress by themselves as punishment for their conspiracies.Duration: 15 minutesStop At: Vidraru Dam, DN7C, Curtea de Arges 117040 RomaniaOne of the biggest dams in Romania, is located on the southern part of the high-altitude Transfagarasan Road. Built during 1961 and 1965, the dam is truly impressive: 166 meters high. The Lake has a surface of 870 hectares and 10 km Ienght. The dam has 42 km underground galleries plus an underground power plant. An ambitious communist project that was done, unfortunately, with the cost of many human lives.Duration: 15 minutes

I have never seen in my life wild bears so close to me. It was a thrilling and exciting experience. Bears are cute but dangerous. Sebastian trained us to not get out of the car and not give food. I took pictures and videos. It was fantastic.

Really interesting trip with Sebastian who is a great guide. Nice car, excellent English and happy to work around what you want during the day. We started our tour off visiting Curtea de Arges Monastery with Sebastian telling me about Romania's history on the way there. Our next stop was the highlight of the tour for me. Poenari Citadel, Vlad Peles former Castle. The walk up the 1480 steps was easy enough, the route was not steep and didn't take too long. At the top while looking at the stunning views of the Carpathian Mountains, Sebastian showed me where some of the historical events surrounding the place took place. The ruins to me were more impressive and historical than Bran Castle. After lunch we went to the Vidraru Dam, while in Vegas in 2019 I took a helicopter flight over the Hoover Dam being stood in person amazed at the sheer size of the Vidraru Dam is a lot better. From there we went to Balea Lake via the world famous Transfagarasan Highway. At the top of the mountain we had

Having done most of the usual tourist trips in Romania on previous visits I wanted something slightly different and this shared tour ticked all the boxes. Booked through TripAdvisor with immediate confirmation and follow up WhatsApp message from Sebastian. Picked up on time - immaculate new car and two fellow travellers - the route is decided on opening times so it was the impressive Vidraru dam first then Poenari Citadel which is well worth the1500 step climb just for the views as the castle is somewhat dilapidated but still impressive (there is now an electric fence to ward off bears but be sure to wear sensible shoes) - good lunch break at the base. On to Curtea de Arges Monastery an interesting stop then finishing off at The Princely Court which Sebastian had already informed me was closed on a Monday but was still able to walk round the outside and the grounds then back to my hotel in Bucharest - a longish but interesting 12 hour day but Sebastian was always willing to stop for co
