Informative. Beautiful. Fun. Changed some of my views on the chemistry of making rum! I wish I could have taken more rum home with me.
Spent a lovely afternoon with friends learning about the oldest rum distillery on the island. Our guide Elon was extremely knowledgable, friendly and entertaining making the experience engaging and memorable. He blew us away with his in-depth knowledge about the history of the distillery. The distillery has an authentic water mill and if your lucky you will see this in motion on your tour. Explanation of the process is clear, you will learn so much! At the end you will get to taste the best rum and some of the rum punch, the perfect ending to this wonderful trip. Highly recommended.
I thought the price included the actual tour. Paid $2 for the tour and $2 for the tasting. The driver was excellent and were learned much more on Grenada. That was worth the experience. The rum tour was quick and the tour guide did not wait until the entire group was there to hear the details. Seemed rushed. No questions were asked because of the speed of the tour.
Tony is a fantastic guide. Great sense of humour and so informative about all of the parishes you drive through up to the distillery. The distillery itself might not be as profit-focused as other distilleries around the world, however that was part of the charm that it was still very rural and you got to see every part of the rum making process. Tony then drove us through Grand Etang and gave us more history of the island and dropped us off where we wanted. Would highly recommend booking Tony to anyone visiting the island!
I knew that rum was made from sugar cane and have taken rum tours in Puerto Rico and Jamaica...but no tour was as complete and informative as this one! we actually were able to watch the process occur from the stoking of the the fires to the water wheel turning to load the sugar cane to be stripped at the beginning of the process. The smells of molasses were pungent and you could tell that you were visiting the "real deal"! Be careful of the rum sampling at the end of the tour. This rum (69% and 75% alcohol) will make even the most seasoned drinker cough!
