Overview
Visit: Pedro St. James National Historic Site, Pedro Castle Road Savannah, KY1-1501 Grand CaymanA guided tour of the Pedro St. James National Historic Site usually starts with a 3D movie followed by a guided tour where you will learn about the amazing history and heritage of "Pedro Castle" and its environs. Self-guided tours are also available. The guided tours usually take about two hours, whereas self-guided tours can be completed in one hour, depending the amount of time you want to stay at the site. The walking tour allows you the freedom to explore all the grounds and enjoy seeing the 18th century Great House and its related artifacts. Absorb the beauty of panoramic ocean views, across seven landscaped acres, and the old stamp room and picture collections. There is also a gift shop on site, as well as seating for lunch if you want to bring a picnic along.Since its construction more than two centuries ago, Pedro St. James has been put to use in a variety of ways – as a cotton plantation, courthouse, jail, Government Assembly and even restaurant – before the Cayman Islands government finally purchased the property in 1996 and restored it to its 18th century grandeur. It has survived hurricanes, fires, vandalism, and even rumors of being haunted. Today it stands as a dynamic piece of Caymanian heritage.Perhaps best known as the “birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands,” Pedro St. James was the venue for a meeting on December 5, 1831, where the decision was made to form the islands' first elected parliament. Later, on May 3, 1835, Robert Thompson, sent from the Governor of Jamaica, held court at Pedro St. James to issue the proclamation ending slavery in the British Empire. Let the site's history of tragedy, triumph and political reformation inspire you!Pedro St. James also provides a stunning location for weddings, events and photo opportunities, owing to its expansive grounds with breathtaking backdrops. There are steps to climb when reaching the upper two levels of the Great House. All other areas are wheelchair accessible.

Traveler Reviews

We are visiting in Cayman for the second year in a row. We are here with my brother sister and their spouses. We decided to visit this historic site and opted for the guided tour. Our guide, Trisha, was so passionate and knowledgeable. We learned so much and appreciated the info that Trisha had. No question went unanswered. If you are visiting the island and want to know the 'history' this is the place . Don't miss it.

My husband and I reached this place by using the public bus from near the cruise port. We could have wandered about the grounds and Great House on our own. We chose to take the guided tour. We were glad we did. There was only one other person in the group, so that was very nice. Our guide Tracy Eden Hurlston is a descendent of the original plantation owner's family. He had great stories to tell about the island, about the family, about the house itself, life on the plantation for both the family and slaves (who became free), the man who took on the restoration of the house, and much more. Tracy made a tremendous difference. The tour included a photo history gallery, a multi-media presentation, brief tour of the grounds, and of course an extended tour of the house. After the tour, office staff called the public bus for us to continue to our next destination. Very much recommend, if you are interested in people and history.

Oldest original house on the island. Your visit starts with a few explanatory boards followed by a good, albeit rather long, introductory movie about the house and its owners, as well as more general history of the Cayman Islands. A few special effects included too! Your fee usually also includes the services of a quirky local quide who is very knowledgeable about the house and the island. The house with a few outbuildings are furnished and well signed with relevant information. Allow about an hour for your visit.

Our guide was one of the best we’d ever had and made our visit super great. She was very clear in explaining the history of the building, how it tied to island history, and the families who lived there. If you like history, as we do, you’d enjoy this tour.

Wow! Yes, this was a amazing tour, by one of the local, she was beautiful, intelligent and well spoken. She have so much info about the house and mean of it exited. It is a beautiful place, well maintained. The landscape and everything is beautiful. The rum taste Museum that there amazing be sure to have a destine driver because for $5 all you taste. The Museum is interesting you learned about owner, his wife and family and slaves.
