Overview
Visit: Western Approaches Museum - The Battle of the Atlantic Experience, World War 2 Underground H Q 1-3 Rumford Street, Liverpool L2 8SZ EnglandWestern Approaches HQ is a secret WW2 bunker underneath Liverpool's City Centre, close to The Town Hall.Walk through hidden rooms and discover the stories locked in the wartime bunker that protected the tactics and secrets of the British Armed Forces plotting to bulwark the Western Approaches and aid the Allied victory.Glimpse the documents and tools the forces used to monitor enemy convoys and inform the British government of their findings whilst keeping their intelligence secret from the enemy, including one of only two surviving wartime phones which had a direct connection to the war cabinet in London.See where commanders and WRNS and WAAF personnel worked every day and night in the Map Room, the nerve centre of the Battle of the Atlantic. Here they monitored convoy routes and vital shipping lines, and pin-pointed enemy locations on a huge map laid across the table; total accuracy was necessary to enable the Royal Navy to contact and destroy the enemy. The Map Room which was the nerve centre of the bunker has remained exactly how as it was left when the doors were closed on 15 August 1945.Experience a self guided tour of the museum where you can walk through the corridors, sit at desks, play with typewriters and teleprinter machines, look at the telephone exchange and try on uniforms. There is also a room at the end of the tour where hot drinks are available at war time prices and there are traditional games to play and a film to watch about life in Liverpool during the war.

Traveler Reviews

Although we live near Liverpool we tend to visit for shopping and food rather than do the standard tourist haunts. Decided that we need to explore the city more and this was a great choice for a wet afternoon in December following Xmas shopping and lunch. Have always been interested in modern history since studying in school and this museum really took you back in time and made you think about how the war was run. Plenty of hand on exhibits and everything was clearly marked. I think it took us about and hour and a half to see everything but we are notorious for looking at every detail! It's a self guided tour and it was very quiet ( mid week) so we took our time. When we purchased the tickets we were told that they could be re used for entrance to the museum again during the year. Didn't ask about how this works as we have too many other places we need to explore in the city! Was definitely glad we visited.

This museum is such a fantastic time capsule. The operations room is definitely the highlight. It really makes you think about the dangers faced by everyone crossing the Atlantic in the war. My children enjoyed exploring the rooms and seeing the old equipment. It wasn't too busy - and felt really safe in these Covid times. I really hope that this museum is able to access some national funding because this is a site which definitely deserves preservation.

Amazing time capsule of an intense wartime drama. Original rooms & stories of the people who fought to keep Britain supplied by vital Atlantic convoys. Loved every minute of the history. Low key but authentic displays, equipment & notes so you can read the background & individual reminiscences of those who served. Some video & just incredible atmosphere from the underground rooms. Like Churchill’s War Rooms in London. Friendly & knowledgeable staff. Great half term visit.

Loved the authecity of the setting - gave a real feel of what it must have been like in those times. Loved the 'hands on' sections great for children, makes it so 'real' for them.

I usually try to book a guide but I and friends went on a self guided tour and all the info we needed was displayed and easy to understand. The staff were amazing, Olivia was full of enthusiasm about the subject which was nice considering she was so young. The chap at the ticket counter was very nice too, thank you to them both. These underground war rooms were amazing and to think the Battle of the Atlantic was planned and won here was interesting. I was with a party of 5 friends and we enjoyed it immensely . It highlighted the part the woman's armed forces helped in the war most of the girls were very young. They are in the process of building a Naafi where you will get free tea and biscuits very soon. This building was under the official secrets act until recently. We all enjoyed a game of Hopscotch !!!!!
