We were probably helped by the fact that we had amazing weather, but this was a very enjoyable trip. The actual hiking part of the day is only about 2 hours so quite achievable for anyone with moderate fitness, plenty of time was given for photo-taking and our guide was very informative and fun to be with. Mt Tarawera is no longer open to the public so you can't just rock up and walk to the crater by yourself, you have to take one of the guided tours, this was a good way to do it.
Had a lovely time to 2 very professional guides/driver very knowledgable Thank you Ben and Jackie, they knew the background to the area and we even had a talk about the different rocks - you do need a certain level of fitness
We were a group of 18 active Seniors, so all 70's plus.......(see U3A) For some of us it was a 'bucket list 'walk, but I quickly discovered you can look at Google Earth and imagine what walking the craters of Mt. Tarawera is like but it is not the same as actually doing it. Our hosts were Dan and Jackie, and it was having them with us that really made this walk the success it was. Everything worked like clockwork, due to their knowledge, experience and friendly professional attitude. We would recommend this walk to all New Zealanders who want to do and see something different. Thank you Kaitiaki Adventures and thank you Dan and Jackie.
I wanted to like this walk ... but unfortunately this was advertised as a 4.5 hr walk it was actually just 2 hours. The day we did it was a very horrible weather day. I was hoping it would get canceled but it went ahead,we saw nothing except fog. The drive was so bad,my partner almost threw up and I have no idea how I survived. I wish they had given us notice of all of it. The plus side is the tour guides are amazing.
The experience itself is quite unique and most memorable. Guides were awesome! Suggest bring price down and have tools to change bus tire
