This is a great experience that everyone should have of they get a chance. You will kayak up a slow flowing river, spend a little time in a bioluminescent lagoon, then head back. Honestly, you spend more time on the stupid van to and from San Juan than you do on the water... but it's still worth it! First off, unless you're the taste idiot like me who goes kayak fishing at night, you haven't done a night paddle, and that alone is awesome, especially in a perfectly temperate December night. Second, you'll see wildlife, from iguanas to birds to bats to tarpon that jump at you. But most of all, the luminescence is just cool. It's not as impressive as the photos make it look, it's just a little sparkle in the water. But you'll never see anything like it elsewhere, and it's a great memory! There are like a billion tour operators in this same lagoon, so I don't think there's anything special about Peniel, but they did a solid job and I loved it.
Everything aligned for us: The day before was also sunny, so the micro-organisms could feed. Also, the next day was a new moon, so we had the cover of darkness. Finally, the rain held off until about an hour after our tour finished. I loved padding through a starlit mangrove forest, gliding my hand through the water to see "sparks and sparkles", and learning about this amazing phenomenon.
It was very beautiful. You will not regret booking this tour. The tour guide was giving good instructions and we was very friendly .
The staff was kind. The tour sucked. After kayaking against the current in the dark for what felt like three and a half days, we finally made it to the bay. There we were greeted by a very faint sparkle in the water. The staff provided some tarps to block out the little bit of moonlight which helped a little bit, but the faint sparkle was still only slightly visible in the water. As an alternative to this tour, I recommend staying at home, sprinkling some glitter in the bathtub and flopping around for a little bit.
I liked kayaking through the secluded area with all the trees. The staff was professional, fun, and kept us moving. Well worth it!
