I enjoyed a very warm sulphur soak in the sulphur pools. It's an outdoor setting and I soaked up the September sun on my skin as I sat on the pool's edge for little breaks - as the water is quite warm - nearly 40 C you need frequent breaks from the pool. It was a lovely relaxing experience. My only feedback on things to improve is the aesthetics of the place - a lot of concrete - perhaps work on landscaping and making the surroundings have a less industrial concrete look!
I feel this place is over rated, over priced ,it’s a place I would not bother with . The mud baths not worth it ,I feel it’s just a scam for visitors who don’t know anything else. I recommend to do your homework for what is around as if you don’t you’ll come away very disappointed and poorer as there’s things to sea don’t do for far lest cost
We did the geothermal guided walk and then the wife and 25 yo daughter did the private sulphur spa experience. The walk was educational but not earth shattering.... All went well until the following day both wife and daughter came down with flu like symptoms and neither got any better as the days progressed. 3 days later the wife ended up in a 24 hr clinic and the daughter had constant lung problems and shortness of breath. We couldn’t get a generic $9.00 puffer in New Zealand without a doctors consultation ( $230 NZ) as we were international , so daughter decided to just do off the counter medication. Funny thing was 2 weeks later we flew home to Oz and had a stopover in Melbourne Airport. She went into a chemist in the airport and bought a $13.00 puffer. 24 hrs later all better. As far as I’m concerned, if you do Hell’s gate, just do the solo walk and forget the rest.
We had a great time, immersing ourselves in the mud and then walking round the park. We visited on a beautiful but quiet morning. On arrival the helpful receptionist gave us the option of a private or shared mud bath. She showed us both of the facilities and we decided on the shared as the facilities are bigger and there was only 2 other people there. We enjoyed the mud experience and hot pools and had a fantastic time walking around the different parts of the park. So interesting and the signs were informative (and funny). Would definitely recommend this activity it’s not like anything else.
We did a big hike today, so it was lovely to relax in the mud bath and was entertaining for the young one too!
