After reading this article you will:

  • Feel confident building a stunning Thailand itinerary.
  • Understand the difference between Thailand’s top destinations.
  • Have specific luxury accommodations, private tours, and wellness opportunities in mind.

Idyllic Destinations

Thailand’s diverse landscapes offer something for every traveler. From the lush northern mountains with ancient temples and hill tribes, to the idyllic southern islands with pristine beaches, and bustling cities like Bangkok, there’s a wealth of experiences. The best itineraries blend these three elements—mountain, island, and city—showcasing Thailand’s rich culture, natural beauty, and vibrant energy.

Islands & Southern Thailand

Thailand’s southern islands are essential for any tropical getaway. Their stunning beaches, clear waters, and vibrant reefs offer the perfect escape. In many areas, private villas are set into stunning cliffsides overlooking beaches and limestone karsts jutting out from the water.

Koh Samui, featured heavily in The White Lotus, attracts travelers seeking a balance of relaxation and vibrant experiences, offering luxurious resorts alongside bustling markets and nightlife. Its diverse offerings, from tranquil beaches to exciting activities, make it a popular choice for those wanting a taste of everything.

Koh Lanta attracts travelers seeking a laid-back and authentic Thai island experience, away from the crowds. Its long stretches of pristine beaches, lush interior, and focus on sustainable tourism make it ideal for those wanting relaxation and connection with nature.

Phuket, the largest island, has diverse offerings, from busy Patong to quieter beaches. Although it is a bit busier than other island destinations in Thailand, the resorts are spread out so travelers still enjoy secluded accommodations.

While not an island, Krabi offers a stunningly beautiful Southern Thailand escape. Travelers are attracted to its stunning limestone cliffs, pristine beaches, and world-class rock climbing opportunities. Beyond its natural beauty, Krabi offers a more relaxed atmosphere than some of Thailand’s other popular destinations, making it perfect for those seeking tranquility and adventure.

And no trip is complete without visiting the world-famous Phi Phi Islands, known for their dramatic limestone cliffs and iconic Maya Bay. These islands provide a range of experiences to suit every traveler.

City

Bangkok is a city of captivating contrasts, where ancient temples shimmer in the shadow of modern skyscrapers and bustling markets spill onto streets lined with serene canals. This vibrant metropolis offers a sensory feast, from the fragrant street food to the ornate details of its historic sites. Whether exploring grand palaces, cruising along the Chao Phraya River, or simply soaking in the electric atmosphere, Bangkok’s blend of tradition and modernity makes it an endlessly intriguing destination.

Many of the luxury hotels in Bangkok are situated along the river. After a familiarization trip, one of our Reservations Agents shared, “there’s something about watching the long tail boats riding by out your window that is really special”.

Mountains

Chiang Mai is a captivating city that effortlessly blends ancient traditions with modern life. Its historic Old City, surrounded by crumbling walls and moats, is home to countless ornate temples, while the surrounding hills offer lush landscapes and opportunities for trekking. The city’s vibrant arts scene, delicious northern Thai cuisine, and relaxed atmosphere make it a favorite among travelers.

Many visitors extend their stay to include Chiang Rai, drawn by its own unique charms. Chiang Rai boasts the stunning White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), a contemporary and unconventional Buddhist temple, as well as the Black House (Baan Dam), an intriguing art museum. The region’s mountainous terrain and proximity to the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet, also make it an appealing destination for those seeking adventure and cultural exploration.

Itinerary Building Tips

"Sandwich" the island destinations

A well-planned Thailand itinerary often “sandwiches” the islands between the mainland destinations. Whether you begin your journey in bustling Bangkok or serene Chiang Mai, the islands are ideal to visit in between. This approach leverages direct flight routes, as many airlines connect northern Thailand to the southern islands, and the islands back to Bangkok, optimizing travel logistics for a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

Consider Seasonality

The dry season (roughly November to April) is generally considered the best time to visit most of Thailand, offering sunny skies and less rainfall. For the southern islands like Phuket, Koh Lanta, and Koh Samui, this translates to ideal beach weather. Bangkok and the northern cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai also enjoy pleasant temperatures during this period. However, Koh Samui experiences a slightly different microclimate and can have good weather even during the shoulder seasons (May-October). While the rainy season (May to October) can bring lower prices and fewer crowds, it also means more rain and potentially rougher seas, impacting island hopping and outdoor activities.

Airlines With Convenient Routes

STARLUX Airlines offers flights in and out of both Bangkok (BKK) and Chiang Mai (CNX) from Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO) and Seattle (SEA). All flights route through Taipei (TPE).

For travelers focused solely on the islands of Thailand, Singapore Airlines offers a nonstop flight from Singapore (SIN) to Phuket (HKT).

Both airlines are preferred partners of Classic Vacations.

Book In Advance

Our in-house experts recommend booking Thailand itineraries at least 6 months in advance.

Luxurious Accommodations

Four Seasons Properties

The luxurious 5-star Four Seasons properties in Thailand are heavily featured in the newest season of The White Lotus and we have no doubt they will delight discerning travelers.

Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui is rumored to be the main filming location for season 3, so we anticipate this property will need to be booked far in advance. Located on a beautiful cliffside with views of the Gulf of Thailand, this resort offers spacious rooms with private pools and the impeccable service Four Seasons is known for.

Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River is a newer, modern property on the river in bustling Bangkok. The rooms are aesthetically pleasing, and the property has a lot to offer – a world-class spa, an art gallery, 3 outdoor pools, fitness classes, a kids club, multiple restaurants, river cruises and more.

Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle is a truly unique property located in the jungles of northern Thailand, not far from the borders of Myanmar and Laos. The camp has a strong focus on elephant conservation and offers incredible opportunities for rescued elephant encounters, trekking, and sanctuary visits. Each luxury tent features a private deck, spacious accommodations, and stunning views. For a truly White Lotus experience, guests can arrange helicopter transfers between the Tented Camp and the Four Seasons Chiang Mai property.

Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai is located just north of the city. It is in a secluded, stunningly beautiful location with a strong emphasis on nature, providing guests with a peaceful retreat.

Rosewood Phuket

We would not be surprised to see The White Lotus cast appear on the grounds of 5-star Rosewood Phuket. A newer property opened in late 2017, it is located beachfront in a secluded cove with a beautiful pool. The “Ta Kahi Restaurant” is a stand-out dining option being right on the beach with the pool next to it. This restaurant is designed to look like a rustic Thai Village and offers authentic Thai cuisine.

Trisara Villas & Residences Phuket

The ocean front pool villas at Trisara Villas & Residences Phuket are a stand-out accommodation option, offering a true sense of privacy, glorious ocean and sunset views, and a breathtaking atmosphere. After returning from a familiarization trip, one of our Travel Specialists reveled in how large the rooms were with multiple sitting areas, large indoor and outdoor showers, outdoor sundecks, and infinity pools. Private BBQs and room service can be arranged on the villa sundeck for a secluded luxury dining experience.

Amanpuri

Amanpuri in Phuket was the very first Aman property. It was originally built as an extension of the owner’s home to host his friends in a way that would allow each of them to enjoy a private residence. Because of this, each villa is extremely private by design. Amanpuri is an excellent choice for discerning travelers seeking to avoid crowds while enjoying all that southern Thailand has to offer.

Anantara Koh Yao Yai Resort & Villas

Anantara Koh Yao Yai Resort & Villas is located on a private island, offering discerning travelers a secluded paradise with pristine beaches and breathtaking views of Phang Nga Bay. The resort’s luxurious villas, each with a private pool, provide a unique level of privacy.

Banyan Tree Properties

With 5-star properties in Bangkok, Krabi, and Koh Samui, Banyan Tree resorts are a fantastic choice for luxury travel in Thailand. In the words of one of our in-house Thailand experts, “Banyan Tree Samui is all-around just absolutely fantastic. Banyan Tree Bangkok has an incredible rooftop bar that is perfect for sunsets because of its city views. It’s easy to get up there if you are staying on property, but I recommend a reservation if you are staying at a different hotel. Banyan Tree Krabi has a view that is unforgettable. You can sit on the beach and revel at the limestone karsts jutting out of the sea.”
