What were your favorite hotels during your trip?

Conrad Tokyo stands out among its 5-star competitors not only in terms of price but also in overall experience and value. One of the highlights of this hotel is the breathtaking views it offers, overlooking the historic Hamarikyu Gardens, which were built over 300 years ago and are truly stunning. Situated on the 28th-37th floors, the property provides top-notch views of the gardens, bay, and city lights.

The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto also pleasantly surprised me. This luxury hotel exceeded my expectations in every way. What stood out to me the most was the unique sense of place that the property offered. While it maintained the high standards of a typical Ritz Carlton, it also had a distinct Japanese aesthetic that was both sleek and inviting.
The hotel’s attention to detail was evident throughout, from the beautiful art collection to the mini Zen gardens scattered around the property. One highlight was the Pierre Hermes bakery boutique, which offered the most incredible pastries I have ever tasted.
What were your favorite tours or experiences during the trip?

Hakone was a truly remarkable experience and really just what we needed, without even knowing it. The area is beautiful, and peaceful and a good respite from the busyness of Tokyo. And you are blessed with a bounty of nature, combine that with the pureness and the crisp of the air … it felt almost healing to the soul, the way only being in nature can.

Participating in cultural experiences is essential for everyone, in one way or another. These experiences offer a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in a different culture, providing a deeper understanding and appreciation of its history and traditions. Embracing these experiences allows individuals to connect with others and develop a greater sense of empathy and understanding. So, this is highly recommended.

What was your favorite dish that you ate?

It seems like every single thing you eat here is amazing. Whether you’re dining at a luxurious high-end restaurant or grabbing street food from a local vendor, the flavors are always outstanding. A particular highlight is the bustling food markets. One standout market is Nishiki Food Market in Kyoto, an absolute must-visit for any food lover.

In some instances, certain locations are renowned for their dishes, making them must-try. So, here are two to add to the bucket list. First up is Takoyaki in Osaka. At some places, people line up around the block for these unique treats. Takoyaki are fried octopus balls topped with a sauce of your choice. Another intriguing dish to try is the black egg in Hakone. Despite its unappealing name, these eggs are simply regular eggs boiled in sulfurous waters, resulting in their unique black shells. What’s even more fascinating is the belief that eating one can extend your lifespan by 5-7 years.
What is something interesting you learned about Japanese culture?

There are numerous fascinating aspects of Japanese culture that leave a lasting impression on visitors. From the impeccable cleanliness to the deep-rooted respect, efficiency, and orderliness, Japan offers a unique cultural experience that is hard to forget. One of the most striking features of Japanese culture is their emphasis on saying yes and accommodating others. Even when expressing something in a passive manner, the Japanese will go above and beyond to make sure you are taken care of.

Another key aspect of Japanese culture is the high level of respect that is shown to others. Whether it is standing to one side on the escalator to allow others to pass, refraining from talking on the phone in public spaces, or avoiding eating in public, the Japanese people prioritize consideration for others’ experiences.

What luxury add-on to a Japan trip would be absolutely worth it?

This is pretty simple but is extremely important. Guides are an essential component of any tour. Their level of knowledge, passion for their country and culture, kindness, and recommendations are invaluable. A guided experience can elevate a tour by tenfold or more. By investing a little extra in a guided tour, you will undoubtedly gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the destination. The expertise and enthusiasm that guides bring to the table make the experience more enriching and memorable.
Out of the cities you visited, which one are you hoping to revisit most?

I would gladly revisit all of the destinations as they left me feeling that there was so much more to be discovered. Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, and Osaka each offer unique experiences that are worth exploring further.

Any other tips for luxe travelers?

Go! No amount of hearing others’ experiences, reading about it, or watching videos will truly capture the magic of the incredible country. Japan is a place you must see for yourself to fully appreciate its beauty and culture.

While Japan may seem intimidating to some, navigating the country is easier than it appears. Utilize technology to help you along the way – there are numerous language translation apps available, such as Google Translate, that can facilitate conversations and translate signs or menus for you.

A few additional tips for your trip: carry a bag for trash as you won’t find many trash cans outside, bring a small washcloth to dry your hands after using public restrooms or participating in purification rituals at shrines. Speaking of shrines, consider purchasing a book to have stamped at each shrine you visit – it makes for a wonderful keepsake of your journey.
Traveling can open up your eyes to so many new experiences that enrich you in every way. It’s something that you need to go and do yourself and see how much beauty and amazement the world has to offer- there is so much beyond just where you live. Japan is an adventure, and it is waiting for you to immerse yourself in all the wonders it has to offer. You can book a trip there with your itinerary ready for you, saving you the stress of figuring out your day to day plans, through Classic Vacations.
