EXPERIENCE THE THRILL OF THE PALIO DI SIENA SUMMER 2025

The Palio di Siena is one of Italy’s most iconic and historic events—a bareback horse race held twice a year in the heart of Tuscany. Dating back to 1633, this centuries-old tradition transforms Siena’s shell-shaped Piazza del Campo into a vibrant arena of medieval pageantry and fierce competition.

2025 Race dates:

  • July 2 – Palio di Provenzano, honoring the Madonna of Provenzano
  • August 16 – Palio dell’Assunta, celebrating the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Each race features ten of Siena’s seventeen districts, or contrade, competing in a thrilling three-lap dash around the piazza. The festivities span several days and include colorful parades, traditional dinners, and the blessing of horses and jockeys.

Fun Fact: In the Palio, it’s not uncommon for a horse to win without its jockey! As long as the horse crosses the finish line first with its decorative headgear intact, victory is claimed—making the cavallo scosso (riderless horse) a celebrated champion.

For those seeking an unforgettable cultural experience, the Palio di Siena offers a unique glimpse into Italy’s rich heritage and communal spirit.
