This half day tour of the historic site of Mayerling, at the heart of the Wienerwald or Vienna Woods, the 45 kilometers-long swathe of forested highlands carpeting much of the region surrounding the capital which are a much loved recreation spot for locals. The romantic route through the woods is home to a host of interesting historic sites, including Liechtenstein Castle, part of the city’s defenses along the Danube since the twelfth century, Heiligenkreuz Abbey, a Cistercian monastery complete with an impressive Gothic cloister and the chapel at Mayerling;
Home to the hunting lodge where Crown Price Rudolf and his mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera, perished together in an apparent murder-suicide. Another highlight is the city of Baden with over a dozen Sulphur springs which are brought to the surface from a depth of about 1.000 meter. You will then take the much loved wine route to enjoy some time relaxing and chatting about the day’s experiences at a Heuriger, one of the typically Viennese taverns serving that year’s new wine harvest.
